In the moving business, as in any industry -  you will find different levels of quality. The moving industry was deregulated (unfortunately for the consumer) over 30 years ago, and since that time there have been many horror stories about movers. Choose a mover who is affiliated with a major vanlines moving company and you will avoid many problems associated with using small independent movers . Some independent movers are good, but some small moving companies are unreliable and unprofessional. They may offer slightly cheaper rates, but to do that they have to cut back on important things like professional help, truck maintenance, equipment, taxes, insurance, and quality of service both during and after your move (repairs, etc). If you call a moving company and the response comes from a cell phone, chances are you can expect only a very basic level of service, at best.

Pricing is only part of the story when you choose your mover. You've heard it before - quality isn't expensive, it's priceless... and with your entire household in the hands of your mover you'll want to invest wisely. Your home represents your single biggest asset. A reputable, quality mover will protect your belongings, and your peace of mind.

You will need to know the criterion used by movers in pricing different types of moves:

Local Moves (household and/or office moves) within 200 miles of Toronto:

Local moves are basically charged by the hour. Rates are normally higher at the end of the month, and at the beginning of the month, when all movers are busiest, just like an airline or a travel agency. Speak with your relocation consultant to determine the best rated dates before you choose your moving date. Keep in mind that booking early will lock in the best rates for your move. A small one-time fuel surcharge is added to defray the cost of fuel and maintenance for the truck. GST applies but not PST. Some moving companies will add extra charges on the day of the move, for stairs, or wrapping, or just about anything they can think of to add on to their price...but at Phillips we don't do that.

National moves (across Canada) and cross-border moving (between Canada and US) :

The costs relating to a cross Canada move are calculated using the northAmerican vanlines tariff, with the weight and the distance as the variant factors. At Phillips, your consultant will always offer you the best price possible - without sacrificing quality of service. All your furniture will be blanket-wrapped at no additional cost - for protection when it is loaded in the truck. Small shipments are consolidated on a 53 ft tractor-trailer, driven by a northAmerican vanlines driver, who drives across Canada and the US. Speak with your consultant about the benefits of using our professional packing services. If you choose to do your own packing, we offer packing materials for sale, and we offer one free delivery (within the GTA - Toronto) with a minimum purchased order of boxes and paper.

International (overseas) Moves:

Charges relating to your international overseas move (removal) are subject to the volume and/or weight of your shipment. You can choose to ship your household door to door, or door to port, but the only recommended way to ship is "door to door" service.
All your furniture is overseas-wrapped using a special multi-layered material called "krubble" - covered with kraft paper on one side and bubble wrap on the opposite side - together they are "kr-ubble". The professional movers and packers at Phillips will make every effort to economize on space in the container to keep your costs down, while at the same time preventing the possibility of any damage to your furniture.
